In an essay about the construction of the houses, Gropius wrote in 1930: “The organism of a house evolves from the sequence of processes that occur in it.”

To popularise this idea, Gropius had designed his own house not only as a place where he and his wife could live, but also as an exhibit. With the help of guided tours, a variety of publications and a series of films entitled “How to live healthily and economically”, the two of them ensured that the public remained interested in the Masters’ Houses years after they had been completed. People were particularly impressed by the household appliances. For example, in the built-in kitchen in Gropius’ house there was a water spray for washing the dishes which had detergent added automatically, a washing machine and a dryer with a spin function.
